If we are already going to spend $1.5M on renovating the sphere, we may as well spend it on something that will attract tourists, elevate the Jerry Frank Amphitheater, and put Salem on the map.

The heritage argument is real. Eco-Earth represented 30,000 volunteer hours and community spirit. But that volunteer spirit hasn’t raised the needed $1.5 million—advocates have collected just $345,500 after years of fundraising.

If the community cannot fund restoration, should the city spend $1.5 million recreating 2003, or invest in 2026?

Traditional restoration preserves the past at significant cost with minimal future impact. LED transformation costs more to operate but could make Salem a regional destination and enhance the amphitheater investment.

Restoring tiles is safe. Building a sphere is ambitious. Salem has spent decades playing it safe. Perhaps it’s time to be ambitious.
