Whenever I tell someone I own a hot yoga studio, I usually hear one of three things:
“I could never do that.”
“I’m not flexible enough.”
Or…
“That’s just not my thing.”
Honestly, I get it. I used to think those things too.
Somewhere along the way, yoga developed a reputation for being all about flexibility. We picture handstands, splits, and people effortlessly folding themselves into impossible shapes. Some people picture a room full of women and wonder if they’ll fit in. Others assume they’re too stiff, too old, or too out of shape to even try.
But here’s the thing:
Hot yoga isn’t about any of that.
It’s not reserved for naturally flexible people. It’s not about touching your toes. It’s not about mastering the perfect pose. And it definitely isn’t about looking a certain way.
It’s about showing up exactly as you are.
Questions I Hear All the Time
Who is hot yoga for?
Everyone.
I know that’s a simple answer, but it’s true.
You don’t need to be flexible, athletic, young, experienced, or in a certain shape to begin. In our classes, you’ll find runners, teachers, healthcare workers, parents, retirees, college students, and people trying yoga for the very first time. You’ll find men and women.
The goal isn’t to be good at yoga.
The goal is simply to show up.
What should someone expect in their first class?
Expect to be welcomed.
Expect to sweat.
Expect to be challenged in ways that have less to do with flexibility and more to do with slowing down, breathing, and staying present.
We encourage people to take breaks whenever they need to. Child’s Pose is always available. Rest is always an option.
One of the things we say often is:
“Take what you need. Leave what you don’t.”
There is no gold star for pushing through.
The practice is learning to listen to your body.
Hot yoga isn’t one-size-fits-all, either. Some classes are designed to be more fitness-focused, while others emphasize slower movement, mobility, recovery, and mindfulness. No matter where you’re starting, there’s usually a style that meets you there.
What do people usually say after their first class?
Usually one of three things:
“That was harder than I expected.”
“I didn’t think I could do that.”
Or my personal favorite…
“Wow…I can’t wait to come back.”
The challenge is real.
But so is the sense of accomplishment when class is over.
What surprises people the most?
How good they feel afterward.
People expect the heat.
They expect the sweat.
They expect the workout.
What they don’t expect is how clear their mind feels when they leave.
Many people walk out feeling lighter, calmer, and more energized than when they walked in.
For one hour, they gave themselves permission to unplug, move, and breathe.
That’s a powerful thing.
Why do people who aren’t “gym people” often love hot yoga?
Because it doesn’t feel like a gym.
There’s no competition.
No comparison.
No pressure to lift heavier, run faster, or keep up with the person next to you.
You simply show up, step onto your mat, and start where you are.
Some days you’ll feel strong.
Some days you’ll feel tired.
Both are welcome.
For many people, hot yoga becomes one of the few forms of movement that feels less like something they have to do and more like something they get to do.
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking,
“Maybe hot yoga just isn’t for me…”
I’d gently encourage you to consider the opposite.
Maybe it’s exactly what you’ve been looking for.
