The holiday season in Salem and Keizer is busy. Lights, markets and parades fill most weekends from Thanksgiving through mid-December. If you are planning what to do with family or friends, this guide puts the main options in one place.
Big light shows
“Magic at the Mill” at the Willamette Heritage Center runs Thanksgiving weekend, from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1. Tickets are about $17 for adults and about $12 for youth, with children 3 and under free. The historic mill site turns into a walk-through light display for several nights. The grounds are lined with lights, model trains and heritage craft demos. There are Santa visits and simple activities for kids. This event works well for families who want a shorter, structured night out close to downtown Salem.
Glow Oregon Christmas Light Festival runs on many nights from late November through December at Roto-Rooter Park, home of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in Keizer. Online ticket prices start around $19.99 plus fees for adults, with lower prices for children and seniors. Toddlers can enter free, and parking is about $5 per vehicle. The theme, “Santa’s Lost Presents,” uses a simple story line and scavenger-style clues. Large light displays, character visits, food trucks and a small vendor area fill the site. This is a good pick if you want a bigger light show and do not mind paying for tickets and parking.
The City of Salem turns on its tree and park display at the Riverfront Holiday Lights Display Kickoff. The event runs in the early evening at Riverfront Park and is free to attend. Families can expect Santa visits, carriage rides and kids’ activities. The park tree and surrounding displays turn on for the season. This night is a short downtown outing that pairs well with a warm drink or a walk on the riverfront paths.
Markets and shopping
The Original Salem Holiday Market at the Oregon State Fair and Exposition Center is a three-day indoor market in December. Admission is free; parking at the fairgrounds is about $10 per vehicle. The event brings together more than 250 vendors in Columbia Hall and Jackman-Long. Shoppers see handmade gifts, local food, decorations and other small items. There is a Santa’s Village, activities for kids, a gingerbread house contest and a tree-decorating contest. This event fits people who want to buy local gifts in one trip and stay out of the rain.
City events in Keizer
The Keizer Holiday Tree Lighting is a free public event in early December. It takes place near the civic center and community tree. Santa arrives with help from the Keizer Fire District. Children can enter a drawing to help flip the switch that turns on the tree. Organizers often serve cookies and cocoa. This works well for younger kids who want to see Santa without a long drive or ticketed event.
Later in the month, the Keizer Holiday Lights Parade moves down River Road. Families line the sidewalks as lighted floats, marching bands, fire engines, car clubs and civic groups pass by. It is free to watch along the route. Only groups that put a unit in the parade pay entry fees. This is a good choice if you like a classic small-city parade and do not mind standing outside for a while.
Neighborhood traditions
The Miracle of Christmas Lights Display in Keizer’s Gubser neighborhood is a long-running tradition. Many blocks of homes decorate with lights and inflatables, marked by snowman route signs. People can drive the loop or park and walk parts of it. Volunteers collect food and cash for Marion-Polk Food Share. This is a strong option if you want a free or donation-based outing and time to move at your own pace.
